Barnett of the 600 block Georgia Ave., who had been on loan to us for 88 years. Born and raised in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Lillian G. Gordon. She was the widow of Stanley T. Barnett Sr. Educated in Norfolk public schools, she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Her love of caring for others led her to study nursing and she was employed at the old and new Leigh Memorial Hospital for 25 years before retiring. She was elected as one of the first presidents of the Colored Licensed Practical Nurses Association. After integration, she was elected vice president of the Practical Nurses Association. In addition to performing her duties in her association, she was very active in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for several years. Edwina was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Bute Street, and was very active in many of its ministries. She served as a deaconess until she was incapacitated by illness and then she became an honorary deaconess. She leaves to cherish her memory and to rejoice in her transition a daughter, Arviette Stewart (Herbert Jr.) of Newport News; a son, Stanley Barnett Jr. (Zella) of Norfolk; a sister, Majora Randolph of New York; a sister-in-law, Martha Brothers of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her sister, Theresa G. Richards. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, 418 Bute St., Norfolk, by the Rev. Robert G. Murray. The family will assemble at the church. Hale Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
