Barr , 91, of Canton Avenue, passed away in a local hospital on March 2, 2000. Born Dec. 15, 1908, in Norfolk, she was a lifelong member of Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church and director of the Children's Sunday School Department for over 40 years. Mrs. Barr was also actively involved in the local and statewide PTA, held local and statewide positions in the Woman's Missionary Union of Virginia, was camp director for five years at Baptist Lodge, a summer camp for Girl's Auxiliary, and enjoyed teaching Bible stories at a weekly Bible club at Westminster Mission. Through her exemplary Christian life and her love for the Lord, she was a great influence in the lives of generations of children. Mrs. Barr was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, and is survived by her loving family: her son, Jimmy and daughter-in-law, Lois; two grandsons, Jimmy and his wife, Jennifer, and Billy and his wife, Jennifer; five great- grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Ben, Joey, Sam, Kasey and Kelly; a brother, Richard M. Jarvis Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral and celebration service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church by Dr. Paul C. Lawson and the Rev. Michael T. Turner. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk. Friends may join the family at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today.
