Norfolk Virginian September 26, 1893

Rev. Stephen S.Barrett, probably the oldest white resident of Berkley, and 
certainly one of the best known and respected, died at his home on Chestnut 
street yesterday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock. Mr. Barrett was quite feeble and 
the illness which eventually caused his death kept him in bed for twelve weeks.  
Mr. Barrett was 81 years old and most of his life was spent in Berkley.
On his 80th birthday, which came on Sunday, he preached a sermon.  He had been 
in the ministry about half a century, but with the exception above noted, he has 
not been able to attend to pastoral labors for some years.  He was a man who was 
beloved by his near friends and esteemed by nearly every citizen of Berkley.  
His death, while expected, was a sad blow to his family and the community in 
which he lived.

The funeral of the Rev. Stephen S. Barrett was held from his late residence, on 
Chestnut street, yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock.  Services were held in 
Chestnut Street M.E. Church and besides a large concourse of friends and 
relatives of the amiable and beloved old gentleman, the funeral was attended by 
Berkley Lodge No. 167, A.F. and A.M., of which he had become a member.
The funeral was simple, but impressive and was very affecting to those who knew 
Mr. Barrett.
The pallbearers were Messrs. Isaac Diggs, S.A. Eley, J.F. Dalby, J.A. McCloud, 
Sr., Capt. J.W.H. Wrenn and Judge George D. Parker.
