Norfolk Daily Landmark November 17, 1888

After many months of suffering from cancer, Mrs. Martha A. Barrett, wife of Rev. 
S.S. Barrett, quietly entered into rest yesterday morning at 12:20 o'clock. This 
grand Christian woman was born February 22d, 1819. She was married August 31st, 
1838 to him who mourns her loss today. October 7th, 1847, she united with her 
husband and a few others in organizing the Christian Church here. From youth to 
old age this noble woman addicted her life to the service of her Master and 
passed away in the full triumph of faith as an infant falling asleep, without a 
struggle. It was a sublime scene to witness - her grandchildren as they stood 
around her and listened to her parting admonition for them to meet her in 
heaven, whither she was hastening. Her three children have preceded her to the 
tomb and eight grandchildren survive. Her funeral will take place at the 
Christian Church tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. and the friends and acquaintances are 
invited to attend without further notice.
