William T. Barron Expires in Norfolk

Was Prominently Connected With Social and Business Life in City

Norfolk, Va., April 11-William Thompson Barron, for many years prominently 
connected with the social and business life of Norfolk, died this morning at 
5:30 o’clock at his home, 518 Warren Crescent, following an illness of three 
weeks. He was a well-known publisher and was a director of Seaboard National 
Bank until his death. 
Mr. Barron suffered a stroke of paralysis three weeks ago and had been 
confined to his home since that time. He was 69 years old, having been born 
at Norfolk navy yard on July 14, 1854, where his father, Commodore Samuel 
Barron, was in command. He finished his school life at William and Mary 
College, and took an active part in civic and social affairs in the city 
until he was stricken.
Entered Newspaper Field
With his cousin, James Barron Hope, he was associated in the management of 
the Norfolk Landmark for many years, filling the position of business 
manager with much success. He also managed the Daily Pilot before it merged 
with the Norfolk Virginian. Later he published his own paper, the Norfolk 
Journal of Commerce. For many years he has been active head of W. T. Barron 
& Co. printing and publishers.
Mr. Barron was treasurer of Norfolk Business Men’s Association for twelve 
years and long a member of the board of water commission and City Council. 
He was first married to Miss Helen Boutelle, of Cambridge, Mass., and 
following her death about twenty years ago, married Miss Charlotte Anderson 
Long, of Boston, Mass.
Funeral Sunday Afternoon
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Richard Samuel Barron and W. 
Thompson Barron, Jr., of Norfolk. He was an uncle of E. R. Baird and Senator 
James S. Barron, with other nephews and nieces living in other cities. 
Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock in Christ 
Episcopal Church. Rev. Francis C. Steinmetz, S.T.D., rector and Rt. Rev. 
Beverly D. Tucker, D.D., bishop of diocese of Southern Virginia, will 
officiate. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery will be private.
