Eleanor Court, died Sept. 25, 1990, in a hospital. He was married to the late Margaret Perry Barry. Capt. Barry was born in Quincy, Mass., and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1939. During World War II, he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters as navigator of the battleship Arkansas, participating in the Normandy invasion as well as the assaults on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Capt. Barry served as commanding officer of the Charles P. Cecil, the Des Moines and the Plymouth Rock prior to retirement from the Navy in 1964. He then obtained a master's degree in mathematics from the College of William and Mary and joined the faculty of Old Dominion University. He taught math at ODU as associate professor for 25 years before stepping down last year. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where he was a lector. He was also a member and former president of the Ryan Club. Capt. Barry is survived by three daughters, Joan B. Smith and Carol A. Barry of Norfolk and Margaret B. Lawler of Corolla, N.C., and a son, Richard F. Barry III of Norfolk; and five grandchildren. A Joyful Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Blessed Sacrament Church by the Rev. Julian Goodman. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
