BARTON, ONCE MUSIC HALL MAN, DEAD Ran Variety Theatre In Downtown Section and Made Money. James M. Barton died yesterday afternoon at 2:15 o’clock at his home, 131 Bank street. He was sixty-one years old and had been in failing health for some time. In his palmy days he was proprietor of several variety theaters. At one time he operated the Auditorium Theater at Nebraska and Union streets, and later the Franklin Theater on the opposite corner. During the Alexander-Chapman revivals services were conducted in the Franklin theater, and it was announced at the time that Mr. Barton, deeply impressed, would turn to other business as a means of livelihood. At one time Mr. Barton was very prosperous, but the advent of the prohibition administration and other things caused him to lose money. Mr. Barton is said to have cared for many a man who was “down and out,” and many a homeless “has-been" actor found lodging in the buildings occupied by his theaters. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Miss Jennie D. Barton. He was a member of Norfolk Aerie of Eagles. The funeral will take place from St. Mary’s Church Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock.
