Bartusiak Sr., 74, of Baylake Pines, died of cancer Nov. 15, 1996, in Sentara Bayside hospital. Born in Milmont Park, Pa., and best known as "Chet" to his friends, he was a quality assurance manager with the Naval Air Systems Command Representative Atlantic in Norfolk, retiring after more than 30 years in civil service. A dedicated Eagle scout in his youth, he also served as scoutmaster for Troop (NU)1 (now (NU)43, in Woodlyn, Pa., where he graduated from Ridley Township High School. He attended the Aero-Industrial Technical Institute in Glendale, Calif., and later entered the Armed Forces' V-5 program. Graduating in 1945 as an ensign and aviator in the U.S. Navy, he served as a flight instructor in Pensacola, Fla., during World War II. His civilian career centered on the field of aviation, from aircraft mechanic to quality inspection, including involvement in quality assurance for the Apollo lunar module program. An officer in the U.S. Naval Air Reserve for 28 years, he rose to the rank of Captain and won for his squadron one of the Navy's highest awards, the Noel Davis trophy. A longtime member of Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 339 in Norfolk, he served as their editor, winning the EAA's first national McKillop Newsletter award. He achieved his life's desire by building and flying his own plane, a Bede 4. He is survived by Wanda Rogala Bartusiak, his loving wife of 51 years. He was predeceased by a daughter, Victoria Grussendorf. Other survivors include a son, Czeslaw A. Bartusiak Jr. and his wife, Ann Marie, of Newport News; a daughter, Marcia Bartusiak and her husband, Stephen Lowe, of Sudbury, Mass.; a daughter, Jane Bailey and her husband, Michael, of Virginia Beach; and son-in-law, Mark Grussendorf and his wife, Susan, of Fredericksburg. His seven grandchildren are Christopher, Andrew and Elizabeth Grussendorf, Brian and Michael Bartusiak and Danny and Angela Bailey. In Pennsylvania, he is survived by three sisters, Stella Miecznik, Sophia Piela and Mary Ann Wavrinevich. A wake service will be conducted Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., with a viewing afterward. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel by Father Joseph Ceriello. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk.
