Very little could be learned of the former life of the dead man, but from the meagre facts obtainable, he was once a very well known man in the Old North State and had broad lands of fertile farms. Misfortune was his lot, and gradually his worldly possessions dwindled until at last, when old age had overtaken him he was left a public charge. During the Civil War he wore the gray and fought from '61 to '65 for the Lost Cause with conspicuous bravery. He will be buried today by the almshouse authorities.
