Norfolk - Matthew W. Bates of 1517 West 43rd Street, died Thursday Nov 14. 
He was the husband of Mrs. Mattie B. Bates.

A native of Petersburg, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Matthew 
Bates. He was employed by Haddaway Florist and was a member of Garden of 
Prayer Chuch of God in Christ.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Gloria Bates of Norfolk, 
and one son, Matthew W. Bates Jr., also of Norfolk; four sisters: Mrs. 
Magnolia Wilkins of Chesapeake, Mrs. Emma Hazelwood and Mrs. Dorothy Benson 
of Norfolk, and Mrs. Jean Willis of Willow Grove, PA; two brothers, Daniel 
Bates of Norfolk and Joe Blanchard of Philadelphia, PA, and five 
grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday, Nov. 18,, in Garden of Prayer Church of 
God in Christ with elder C. Purkett officiating. Burial was in Calvary 
Cemetery with Elton Funeral Home in charge.
