Mrs. Bates, a native of Norfolk, was the daughter of the late Samuel and Essie Gwaltney Lewis and wife of the late Johnny Bates. She was formerly employed as secretary of Queen Street Baptist Church, where she was also a member. She was a member of the Executive Board of United Order of Tents and was a member of Lane Memorial Tent (NU)185, Order of Eastern Star Ada (NU)2 Chapter, the Elks, Heroine of Jericho (NU)185. Survivors include two sons, James Savage and Meredith Savage, both of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Queen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Peter Wherry. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Riddick Funeral Service.
