Kathryn Ann Woodson Batte, "Kitty," of Richmond, died quietly at age 98 on the last morning of the decade, December 31, 2010, with her family at her side. She was the widow of DuRoc Jones Batte. She was predeceased by her parents, William Felix Woodson and Kathryn Ann Boatwright; by her brothers and sister, Benjamin F. Woodson, William P. Woodson, and Elizabeth Woodson Mayes; and by her niece Susan Woodson Pechfelder. She is survived by her nieces and nephew, Margaret Woodson Nea, Jean Woodson Minix, Benjamin M. Woodson, and great nieces and nephews, Courtney Nea Jones, Ann Meade Nea Watkins, Holly Minix Urbanek, Kathryn Woodson DuMont, Benjamin F. Woodson, and Jason Woodson Pechfelder. She is survived by eleven great-great nieces and nephews. Born February 3, 1912, she was raised in Ginter Park and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1931. A graduate of Longwood College, she was a teacher at Bell Bryan Day Nursery School and later taught preschool in Alexandria, Virginia. During World War II, she served as a driver for the Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross Motor Corps, a war time transportation service. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Jamestown Society. She and her husband lived in Alexandria for many years, retiring to Imperial Plaza in Richmond in 1986. At the end of her gracious life, she will always be remembered for her generosity, indomitable spirit, genteel hospitality, and love of life. Her faithful caregiver, Mable Ross, said succinctly of Kitty, "She is the kindest person I have ever known." Family will receive friends at Woody Funeral Home on Parham Road on Monday, January 3, from 5:00 to 7:00. Her service will be held at her church, St. Albans, on Hermitage Road on Tuesday, January 4, at 11:00. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk.
