JOS. F. BATTLEY The many friends of Mr. Joseph F. Battley, proprietor of "The Bank" saloon, No. 11 Bank street, were pained to hear of his sudden demise, which occurred at his residence, No. 101 Mariner street, at 2 o'clock yesterday morning, after an illness of only four days. Mr. Battley was on duty at his place of business Saturday night. At 12 o'clock Tuesday night he was engaged at his home in a business conversation with one of his employes, who resides with him. Deceased was the son of Mrs. Tomasia L. and the late Mr. Joseph F. Battley, of this city, and was 29 years of age. He leaves a widow, the daughter of Mr. John Sadler, of Norfolk, formerly of Petersburg, and two children. Mr. Battley was a member of Norfolk Lodge, B.P.O. Elks and Lafayette-Lodge, I.O.O.F., both of which will attend his funeral from Freemason Street Baptist Church, at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon. For six years Mr. Battley was in the employ of the Atlantic Hotel, and had the full confidence of his employers. When the late war broke out he was Quartermaster Sergeant of the Fourth Virginia regiment and went as far as Richmond with the command, whence it was called into active service. He was a gentleman of genial and whole-soul manners, and a general favorite with all who knew him.
