Norfolk Virginian March 27, 1877

Funeral of the Late Joseph Battley, Esq. - The funeral of this lamented 
gentleman, who died at his residence on Bank Street on Sunday last, took place 
yesterday afternoon from the Freemason Street Baptist Church, of which he was a 
consistent member.  The services were conducted by the Rev. W.D. Thomas, pastor 
of the church, the following gentleman acting as pallbearers: T.P. Warren,, 
Esq., C.A. Davis, Esq., Dr. E. Cutherill, Thomas B. Toy, Esq., George W. Dey, 
Esq., and Wm. Phillips, Esq. At the conclusion of the services the remains were 
conveyed to Elmwood Cemetery, followed by a large number of the friends and 
acquaintances of the deceased and there interred with the usual solemn rites
