Battley, of this city, died this morning at 10 o'clock at his home, No. 107 Redgate Avenue, Ghent, after a protracted illness from a heart disorder, in the 45th year of his age. He was a native of Norfolk, had resided here all of his life, and was widely known and very highly esteemed in the community. He was for a long time of the firm of Battley & Spann, but latterly has been in the stove and tinware business alone. He leaves his wife, but no children and is also survived by his brother, A.M. Battley, of Norfolk, his half brother, John Battley, also of this city and his step mother, Mrs. Alice E. Battley, two half brothers, Lawrence Battley and Lee Battley and a half sister, Mrs. Callie Simms, all of Washington, D.C. The deceased was prominent in Pythian circles and was formerly colonel of the First Virginia Regiment, Uniformed Rank, K. of P. He was a member of Brambleton Lodge No. 56, of the same order. He was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The funeral will occur Monday. ******************************************************************************* COL. GEORGE W. BATTLEY The obsequies of Colonel George W. Battley were held from his late residence, 107 Redgate Avenue, Ghent, at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and was numerously attended, including a delegation of the Knights of Pythias, of which the deceased was a prominent member. There was a profusion of beautiful floral tributes. The service was conducted by Rev. Father R. A. Drake of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Rev. Father John Doherty of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The interment was in St. Mary’s cemetery. Following were the pall-bearers: M. T. Friary, Virginius Tucker, W. H. Barnard, P. J. Riley, John J. Burke, T. Walton Stanton, W. G. Hill and Samuel G. Williams.
