A lifetime resident of Norfolk, he was a son of Joseph W. and Mrs. Lena Whyte Batts. He was a member of Episcopal Church of the Ascension and a retired employee of the U.S. Railway Postal Department. He was an Army veteran of World War I. Surviving, besides his widow, are two daughters, Mrs. William M. Martin and Miss Gertrude R. Batts of Norfolk; a son C. W. (Bill) Batts of Chesapeake; a sister, Mrs. Jane B. Rogan of Morgantown, W. Va.; and five grandchildren. The body will be taken from Smith & Williams Funeral Home to Episcopal Church of the Ascension for a funeral service Friday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Frank L. Rose Jr. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will assemble at 9500 Willow Court. They have requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be sent to the building fund of Episcopal Church of the Ascension.
