He was 83. Richard was born in Norfolk on Jan. 1, 1925, to the late Robert Payne Waring Baylor and Lena Jarvis Baylor. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Payne Waring Baylor II. During World War II, he served as a firefighter for the Army Air Force in the Pacific theater. Following his return from overseas, he completed his studies at Maury High School. He then attended the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity, Alpha chapter. There he met his future wife. They were married in 1950 and returned to Norfolk, where he had a successful career as an accountant and raised his family on the same street on which he was raised. Richard was a longtime member and former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow for his many years of dedicated humanitarian services with the Wards Corner Lions Club. He was also involved with Elk Club Lodge No. 3, the Tidewater Basketry Guild, and was an avid Norfolk Admirals fan. He especially loved spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 57 years and their four sons, Richard Baylor Jr. and his wife Lelia of Clinton, Tenn., Robert Payne Waring Baylor III and his wife Mary Jo of Norfolk, John Keesee Baylor and his wife Sonya, also of Norfolk and David McIntosh Baylor and his wife Ann of Herndon, Va.; his sister, Lena Brunson and her husband William; and his brother, James Baylor and his wife Marion all of Norfolk. He will also be missed by his four granddaughters, Katie, Caroline, Colleen and Leigh and a host of other family, including Vivian Baylor of Alexandria, Va., and many friends. The family would like to thank Province Place for providing him with two years of loving care. Special thanks go to Donna Cox for bringing even more smiles to his day. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church on Colonial Avenue in Norfolk by the Rev. Valena Hoy. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias. Online condolences may be sent to the family at hdoliver.com.
