Born January 25, 1921, in Portsmouth, Virginia, he was raised in Biddeford, Maine. After graduating from Biddeford high School as class valedictorian, he received an appointment to West Point, which he declined due to family matters. He served in the Army Air Corps briefly during World War II and had a career in sales. He retired from Priest Electronics in 1983 and was a member of the Sales Executive Club. He had an interest in theater and played the lead role in Norfolk Little Theater's "Witness for the Prosecution" in 1956. After converting to Catholicism, he was active in Blessed Sacrament Church and later a member of Sacred Heart Church. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elinor Robertshaw Bean; his seven children, Susan Bean, Nancy Oestreich and her husband, Donald, Peter Bean, Catherine Hoyle and her husband, John, Claudia Bean and her husband, Ron Smith, Michael Bean and his wife, Donna, and Martha Bean and her husband, Jason. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a niece and three nephews and their families of Kennebunk, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Thursday, November 2, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Daniel Klem officiating. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, is handling the arrangements. The Bean family would like to thank Sentara Hospice Care for making Harold's last days so peaceful. He was surrounded by loving family members until the end. In lieu of flowers, the Bean family encourages contributions be made to the donor's favorite charities.
