Charles Wingo Beard, Jr., 87, a retired hardware merchant, died Sunday, August 
20, 2006, at home after a long illness. Mr. Beard was a native of Norfolk, VA, 
born March 20, 1919. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Edmonds 
Beard; his parents, Charles Wingo Beard, Sr. and Annie Cameron Hanson Beard; and 
a brother, Russell Christian Denby Beard. He was a charter member of Bow Creek 
Presbyterian Church. Mr. Beard was the owner of Plaza Hardware, Princess Anne 
Plaza Shopping Center, Virginia Beach, VA, and co-owner of B & S Hardware Store 
at Wards Corner, Norfolk, VA. He also retired from Clark- Whitehill Builders. He 
was a former assistant registrar for the City of Virginia Beach and served on 
the Planning Commission for the City of Virginia Beach for nine years. He was a 
founder of Princess Anne Plaza Civic League. Charles Beard served in the US Army 
during World War II for three and a half years in Africa, Italy, and France. 
Survivors include a son, Charles Wingo Beard III, of Rock Hill, SC; and two 
daughters, Sharon Elizabeth Beard and Mary Sharlene Beard, both of Virginia 
Beach, VA. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, 
2006, in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, VA, with military honors. Friends may join 
the family from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven 
Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to Plaza Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box
