A14 NORFOLK - A funeral service for Mrs. Esther Lillie Beckett, a retired school teacher, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in St. John AME Church the the Rev. A. R. Powell. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with Mourning Glory Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Beckett, 92, died Sunday in a hospital. She lived at 847 Merrimac avenue. A native of Northampton County, she was a daughter of John and Mrs. Sallie Pitts and widow of the Rev. J. W. Beckett Sr. She was graduated from Virginia State College in 1893 and taught school on the Eastern Shore. Later she came to Norfolk and taught 30 years before retiring. Mrs. Beckett was a Missionary of St. John AME Church and a member of Margaret Frances Order of Eastern Star Chapter 101. Surviving are five sons, E. J. Beckett, Vattelle Beckett and the Rev. W. J. Beckett Jr., all of Norfolk, Ernest Beckett of Accomack County and S. P. Beckett of New York; two daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Nottingham of Norfolk and Mrs. Irene McNamara of New York; grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
