Merrill Beck, Jr., 76, passed away in his home on April 2, 2005. Mr. Beck was born in Norfolk on June 5, 1928, to the late N. Merrill Beck, Sr. and Mamie Beck. He attended Maury High School, the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary and Virginia Tech. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Beck; his son, N.M. Beck, III, and his wife, Naomi; his daughter, Theresa Zacek, and husband, Ray, of Tampa, FL; his daughter, Beverly Outzs, and husband, Garrett; his daughter, Cecilia Hess, and husband, Barry; his son, Joseph Beck; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Outzs, Will Outzs, David Zacek, Brita Zacek, Nina Beck, N.M. Beck, IV, Alex Hess and Haley Hess; his aunt, Virgie Robertson; his uncle, Vincent Contrado and wife, Virginia; his uncle, Raymond Beck; and his aunt, Antoinette Baxter. He worked as a civil engineer and land surveyor in private practice for 48 years. He went into business in 1957, with the help of Sam Armistead, a local engineer and land surveyor. He and Mr. Armistead began trading as Armistead and Beck. After Mr. Armistead passed away, he began N. Merrill Beck, Jr. and Associates, which later incorporated under the name of Beck Associates, which is still in operation. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He was a past Grand Commander of the Padul Caravan of the International Order of the Alhambra, past president of the Roma Lodge-Order Sons of Italy in America, past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus and the Ryan Club. He served as a member of the board and as a past president of St. Mary's Cemetery, on the advisory board of the Bank of Hampton Roads and the board of St. Matthews Federal Credit Union. His family and friends will miss him dearly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian wake will be held today at 7 p.m. at the church. H.D. Oliver, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
