She was born on June 30, 1945, in Burdette, Virginia, to the late James Roosevelt Hawks and Bernice Brown Hawks. Annie graduated from Hayden High School in Franklin, Virginia, and matriculated at Norfolk State University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History. After graduation, she began her stellar teaching career at Booker T. Washington High School in Suffolk, VA. Shortly after having her first child, Jose III, she began teaching 2nd grade at St. Mary’s Academy until 1985. In 1985, she began teaching for Norfolk Public Schools at Coleman Place Elementary School. As if teaching a class of twenty or more 2nd graders and having four children of her own were not enough, Annie pursued and received her master’s degree in Pre-Elementary Education from Norfolk State University in 1988. She taught countless students until she retired in 2007. As a teacher, Annie enjoyed watching the growth of her students. She touched so many lives in and out of the classroom with her wisdom, kindness and often tough love. She was fond of planting flowers and working in the yard. She also loved watching and playing basketball. Above all, she cherished her family. She was selfless, dedicated and hardworking. Annie was preceded in death by parents, James Hawks, Bernice Hawks; siblings, James Hawks Jr., Benton Hawks, Robert L. Hawks, Joyce Burney; son, Jose Belardo III (Elaine), and grandson, Darren Belardo. Annie is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Jose H. Belardo Jr. of Chesapeake, VA; her children, Mark Belardo (Betyshia) of Chesapeake, VA, Karen Dickens (Carl) of Manassas, VA, Joanne Williams (Illinoise) of Virginia Beach, VA; her siblings, Richard B. Hawks of Franklin, VA, Bernice Hawks of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jasper Hawks of Drewryville, VA; twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to The Deeper Window Association, a 501(c)3 established by Annie’s oldest son, Jose and wife, Elaine, to advocate for families braving dementia.
