All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Robert Woolfitt http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00034.html#0008401 June 19, 2026, 9:55 pm Norfolk Ledger-Dispatch October 29, 1918 SMITH BELOTE Smith Belote, aged 79, a well-known Confederate veteran, passed away at his residence on Mozart avenue, October 28, at 7:20 a.m. When the first bugle call sounded in 1861, he responded at once to the colors of the Confederate States by volunteering under Major Woodhouse, Company H, Sixteenth Virginia Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia. He took part in all the battles in which his regiment was engaged, the most important being both battles of Manassas, Seven Pines, Bull Run and Gettysburg. He was wounded at The Crater, July 30, 1864; again wounded on the Jerusalem plank road. He was present at Appomattox Court House, Va., April 9, 1865, when General R. E. Lee surrendered to General U. S. Grant. For his services, he received a cross of honor. On June 30th, 1884, he was elected a member of Pickett-Buchanan camp of this city. He had been a resident of this city since 1854. Mr. Belote is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Belote; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Pierey; four sons, James W., John C., Benjamin F., Charlie E., and seven grandchildren, Misses Ruth and Pauline Belote, Mr. Russell Pierey, Bernard, Maurice, Bryon and Carlton Belote, all of Norfolk. The funeral service will be conducted privately at the grave in Elmwood cemetery Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. J. T. Riddick, of Park Avenue Baptist church, officiating.
