(Jeep) BENNETT, composer, arranger and instrumentalist VIRGINIA BEACH — Norman Smith (Jeep) Bennett, 65, of 308 Shad Lane in Sandbridge, died Sunday in a hospital. Bennett, a native of Rocky Mount, N.C., was a jazz clarinetist who also composed and arranged music. He once played in the bands of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. Bennett was selected as one of the 10 best clarinetists in the country by Downbeat Magazine. He played in Tidewater for 20 years, but moved to New Orleans in 1979. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Roper Bennett; his mother, Ruth Dawson Bennett of Rocky Mount; two daughters, Mary Alice Bennett of Beaumont, Texas, and Anne B. Howerton of Portsmouth; two sons, Father Norman S. Bennett of the Dominican Republic and Michael Joseph Bennett of Hawaii; four sisters, Ruth Fentress Howell, Huldah B. Easley and Dorothy Alice Bennett, all of Rocky Mount, and Jane Grey Davis of Portland, Ore.; three brothers, Milton Dawson Bennett of Fullerton, Calif., Benjamin E. Bennett of Alexandria and Joseph Evans Bennett of Leesburg; 17 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass of the Resurrection will be said at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth by Father Norman S. Bennett. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will be at 4613 Norman Road, Portsmouth. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. today in Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
