Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - January 14, 2007
NORFOLK - Vernon Lamar Benns of the 1500 block of St. Julian Ave. went quietly
and peacefully into eternal rest Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, after a courageous
battle with cancer. He was a native of Norfolk and the son of the late Martin
Sr. and Virginia Lee Benns. He was the husband of Annie M. Benns.

Vernon was a skilled carpenter and was well-known for his gentle spirit and
willingness to help anyone who needed his help. Vernon will be sorely missed by
his wife, Annie Mae Benns; brothers, Martin Benns Jr., Nathaniel Benns and
Jerome Benns; stepchildren, Betty Pryor and Joharn Eldridge; sisters-in-law,
Vivian Benns, Voncil Benns and Sandra Benns.

A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Riddick
Funeral Service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive
friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m.
