He was a native of Norfolk and the son of the late Martin Sr. and Virginia Lee Benns. He was the husband of Annie M. Benns. Vernon was a skilled carpenter and was well-known for his gentle spirit and willingness to help anyone who needed his help. Vernon will be sorely missed by his wife, Annie Mae Benns; brothers, Martin Benns Jr., Nathaniel Benns and Jerome Benns; stepchildren, Betty Pryor and Joharn Eldridge; sisters-in-law, Vivian Benns, Voncil Benns and Sandra Benns. A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Riddick Funeral Service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
