Benton of 2421 Barre street died in Hampton Veterans Hospital after a short illness. A native of Norfolk, he was the husband of Mrs. Tanzetta Benton and a son of the late John C. and Mrs. Pinky A. Benton. He worked 10 years for Murray Goldsticker’s Grocery and was an usher of St. John AME Church, Bute street, and a member of Progressive Masonic Lodge and Sons of Norfolk. Besides his widow, surviving are a son, William F. Benton Jr., a stepdaughter, Miss Louise B. Benton; a brother, John C. Benton; and a sister, Mrs. Gladys Payton, all of Norfolk. Services were held in St. John AME Church by the Rev. R. A. Powell. Burial was in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery with Hale Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
