He was a native of Norfolk and the grandson of Lycurgus Berkley, founder of the town of Berkley, now a part of Norfolk. His father was the late Waverly Lee Berkley, for many years president of the Berkley Permanent Building and Loan Association, now Home Federal, and vice president of the Merchants and Planters Bank, now part of Bank of Commerce. His mother was Mrs. Judith Elizabeth Ferebee Berkley. He attended Norfolk private and public schools and was a veteran of World War I, having served in the Naval Reserves in 1917-1918. After being affiliated for years with Merchants and Planters Bank, he formed a partnership with the late John W. Nash in the insurance firm of Nash and Berkley. Later he and the late Samuel Lyons Jr. formed the Security Insurance Agency, of which he was first secretary-treasurer and later president. He was a director of the Home Federal for about 35 years and vice president for 20 years. He was a former vestryman and church treasurer of St. Brides Episcopal Church. For the past 15 years he was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. He was a member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and of the Farmington Country Club. He was also a member of the Doric Lodge of Masons and of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara Evelyn McCoy Berkley; one daughter, Mrs. Robert D. Harrison of Philadelphia; two sons, Lt. Waverley Lee Berkley III. USMC, stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and John McCoy Berkley of Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. Richard C. Owens and Mrs. David Armistead Dashiell and one brother Fairfax M. Berkley, all of Norfolk; and two grandchildren. The body was taken to the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Norman Slater, rector, Church of the Good Shepherd. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Berkley.
