Mr. Bernard was a son of the late Dr. R.S. and Mrs. Sarah Barrett Bernard of Berkley, and lived here until seven years ago when he made his home in Burgaw, N.C., where his family will reside. He was a machinist by vocation and said to have been one of the best in this section, and was several times foreman of machine shops of this section. He had been sick but seven days, first being taken with the flu, which developed into pneumonia, and lived only a short time. In addition to his widow, Mrs. Ella Spence Bernard, and these children, Gladys, M., Ella Louise, Grace Thornton, Bessie E., Catherine, Robert Spence and Thornton Stith Bernard, he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. L.B. Rogerson, Petersburg; Mrs. J.D. Howard, Berkley and Mrs. C.E. Leary, West Leary, N.C. The funeral will be conducted at the grave in Magnolia Cemetery on Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock.
