John Bernard, 27, of 709 May avenue, Brambleton, who died in a local hospital at 
10:14 o’clock yesterday morning of pistol and gun shot wounds in the groin.

Two Members Of Gang Had Record Here

John Bernard and Archie Austin Arrested On Number of Occasions

Both John Bernard, who was fatally wounded, and Archie Austin, who was captured, 
slightly wounded, in the unsuccessful post office robbery attempt at Dendron 
yesterday morning, had long records of minor charges and convictions on file 
against them at police headquarters here. The record of E. W. (Bud) Austin, who 
was killed, was not on file and that of John Creekmore shows only two convictions 
on misdemeanor charges.

Records show that both Bernard and Archie Austin had been known to the police for 
a number of years.

Bernard’s record: August 26, 1919, aged 13, accused of petit larceny. Paroled in 
Juvenile Court.
Sept. 28, 1919, aged 13, arrested for housebreaking. Paroled in Juvenile Court.
Feb. 31, 1933, arrested for petit larceny. Sent to Virginia Industrial School for 
indefinite period.
June 24, 1925, arrested for grand larceny of automobile. Pleaded guilty to 
unlawful use and sentenced to 60 days in jail.
1926, several fines for drunk and disorderly.
June 23, 1926, arrested for grand larceny of automobile. Not a true
bill found.	I
December, 1927, through April, 1931, fined three times for being drunk, once for 
gambling.
May 23, 1931, arrested for violation of Prohibition Act. Sentenced to one month in 
jail and fined $100.
Jan. 5. 1933. arrested for maintaining gambling house. Fined $100.
