Bernard, 70, of the 7000 block of Auburn Ave., died June 15, 1997, in his residence. A native of Norfolk, he was a member of Queen Street Baptist Church, Norfolk, and its usher board, Prince Hall Masons New Light Lodge (NU)196. He was a merchant seaman of the National Maritime Union with 35 years of service before retiring six years ago. Survivors include his wife, Clara M. Bernard; two daughters, Sylvia Williams of Virginia Beach, Brenda Basnight of Norfolk; a sister, Mary Smallwood of Norfolk; five grandchildren; five nieces, four nephews; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Queen Street Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Peter Wherry. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk. Viewing will be Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Pretlow's Funeral Home and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. Family and friends will assemble at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at 1255 Rosemont Court, Norfolk, for the procession.
