Joseph Bess, one of the owners of a local taxicab company in Norfolk, died 
at a Norfolk hospital on Thursday, Dec. 30.  Stricken at his home at 823 
Marshall avenue, he was taken to the hospital on Dec. 29.  He had been 
ailing, but worked on Dec. 26 and went out on Monday.

Funeral services were held at New Calvary Baptist Church, Monday, Jan. 3, at 
1:30 p.m. with the pastor, Elder Samuel A. Wilson, officiating.  Mr. Bess 
had been a member of New Calvary 22 years.  He had been in the taxi business 
25 years.

A native of Goldsboro, NC, Mr. Bess was the son of Mrs. Ada Bess and the 
late James Bess.  He was brought to Norfolk when he was six years old.  He 
attended the schools in Norfolk.

Several out of town people attended the funeral including Paul Warren, a 
student in the School of Religion at Shaw University, Raleigh, NC.  Mr. 
Warren is a cousin of the deceased.

Pallbearers were George Carter and Mr. Bess’ associates of the cab company.

In addition to  his mother, Mr. Bess is survived by two sisters, Mrs.Sarah 
Bray, New York City, and Miss Grace Bess;  three aunts, Mrs. Hattie Platt, 
Baltimore, and Mrs. Luberta Warren and Mrs. Gracie Leggett, both of 
Goldsboro, NC;  a niece, Mrs. Adel Black, Norfolk;  several cousins and 
other relatives.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with Hale’s Funderal Home in charge of 
arrangements.
