She was the daughter of the late John B. Owens, Sr., and Mrs. Sophia Herbert Owens. A native of Norfolk, the deceased had been since childhood a member of St. John’s AME Church where funeral services were held Sunday, May 25, with the Rev. J. R. Johnson, Jr., minister, in charge. In addition to the eulogy by the minister, Mrs. Sadie Johnson read the family obituary and made acknowledgements of the numerous expressions of sympathy from relatives, friends and fraternal organizations. Miss Myrtle C. Griffin sang “Crossing the Bar.” Mrs. Blacken was also a member of the Grand United Order of Tents and Independent Order of St. Luke. The floral designs were numerous and beautiful and gave silent expressions to the esteem in which the deceased was held by the family, community, friends and organizations with which she was associated. The survivors include her husband, Ellis Blacken, Sr.; one son, Ellis, Jr.; two brothers, John B. Owens, Jr., and Richard Owens; two nieces and other relatives and friends.
