Virginian-Pilot March 10, 1903
The announcement of the death of Mrs. Mary Caroline Blake, wife of Mr. Alfred 
Blake, at her home, No. 521 Freemason street, Sunday morning at 5 o’clock, was 
received with expressions of great sorrow by her numerous friends and 
acquaintances in Norfolk, where she has resided for forty years. She was a woman 
of many endearing qualities of head and heart and was universally esteemed in 
the community. Besides her husband, she is survived by four children, Mr. Frank 
W. Blake, Mrs. J. W. Barbour, Mrs. Judge Edward Spalding and Mrs. Alice 
Barcroft. The deceased was an exemplary member of the First Presbyterian church. 
Her funeral was held from the residence at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon and was 
largely attended. The service was conducted by Rev. Joseph Rennie, D.D., pastor 
of the church. The remains were laid to rest in Elmwood cemetery. Following were 
the pallbearers: R. W. Santos, R. S. Cohen. W. H. Collins, Dr. R. L. Payne, Mr. 
Burbank, Dr. Freeman, D. A. Watt and J. E. Keeling.
