Yesterday evening about dark persons at work near the ferry dock saw a white woman sitting upon the steps which lead down to the landing of the steam launches from the navy yard. She was approached by one of the men who asked if she was sick. Receiving an affirmative answer, he said he would go and find an officer to carry her home. He found the officer and returned in a few minutes, but the woman had disappeared. An alarm was given, a search made and her lifeless body was soon discovered floating in the dock. She had been in the water about twenty-five minutes and life was extinct. The Coroner was notified and inquest held. The body was taken to the station where she was identified as Mrs. Ellen Bland, a widow, without children, 50 years of age, a resident of High Street. From the police station the body was carried to Smith's undertaking establishment on Bank Street and later to the residence of Mr. Thomas Dixon. Mrs. Bland was frequently very despondent and during such periods her mind was seriously affected. She has a brother who resides in Norfolk County.
