Born in Norfolk, June 18, 1887, he was a son of William A. and Mrs. Winifred Canadan Boggs. His father was a Norfolk policeman. Boggs’ newspaper career dated back to June 1802 with the Public Ledger, which merged in 1906 to become the Ledger-Dispatch. When the Ledger and The Virginian- Pilot consolidated in 1933, he headed the press and stereotyping departments. He went on the retired list in July 1949. He was a life member of Norfolk Elks Lodge 38 and an honorary member of Owens Masonic Lodge 164. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Winifred Boggs McClung of Richmond; two sons, William L. Boggs, of Virginia Beach and Charles E. Boggs Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. John William Ross of Millbrae, Calif., and Miss Ida Boggs of Norfolk; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. A funeral service will be conducted in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Saturday at 3 pm by the Rev. Walton Davis of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The family has requested that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
