Feb. 13 1942 Charles Borjes, 75, Outstanding Musician, Dies Funeral to Be Tomorrow; Father of Virginian Pilot Photographer Charles Borjes, 75, a prominent figure in Norfolk musical circle for many years, died yesterday at noon at a local hospital. Though he had been in failing health for 10 years, he had been seriously ill only the last three weeks. An instructor in violin, piano and flute and leader of orchestral groups here for many years, Mr. Borjes was particularly active on the musical front here during the period from 1907 to 1920. De directed the orchestra at the Colonial Theatre, when it was opened here about three decades ago and later conducted the orchestra at the Norva. At one time he organized and directed his own symphony orchestra composed of his pupils. The advent of mechanical music forced his retirement from the theatre orchestra field in the early twenties, and failing health required him to give up his own studio for the instruction of pupils in his violin and piano classes. His only musical interest he maintained up to the time of his serious illness was his affiliation with the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, with which he practiced and played faithfully, only his illness prevented his appearance with the group in its most recent performance Monday night. Mr. Borjes was a native of New York City and came to Norfolk in his early teens. Here he married the former Miss Gertrude Russell, who survives him. He made his home at 503 Manteo Avenue with a son, Charles S. Borjes, staff photographer for the Norfolk Virginian Pilot. He was an active Mason, being a member of Elizabeth Lodge, and a Shriner. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Mrs. L.H. Batts, of Norfolk; five sons, Charles S. Borjes of Norfolk; George Borjes of Portsmouth; Robert W. Borjes, of Norfolk; Henry V. Borjes of Wilmington, N.C., and Russell Borjes, of Atlanta, and twelve grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Gregory Funeral Home, Granby and Thirty-Forth Streets. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Members of the family have requested that no flowers be sent.
