Mrs Carrie Barney Borland, aged 79, mother of Col Charles B Borland [1886-1972], director of public safety [City Manager 1938-1945] and widow of Thomas R Borland [1844-1900] former law partner of the late Judge T H Wilcox, died at her home 322 West York street, following a long illness. Mrs Borland was a native of Richmond and daughter of the late William and Mary Corliss Barney of that city. She had been a resident of Norfolk since marriage [23 December 1879] and was widely known in the city. Besides Colonel Borland, she is survived by another son Ramsey Borland [1883-1939] and a daughter Mrs Benjamin Burroughs [Carrie B,1888-pre1949], both of Norfolk. She also was stepmother of Armistead Borland [1875-1949] and an aunt of Mrs Douglas Gordon of Norfolk. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the funeral apartments of R D Oliver, 610-12 East Freemason street, the Rev E Ruffin Jones rector of St James Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be private in Elmwood Cemetery [Lot 38]. Portraits of Carrie, her husband, Thomas, son, Charles, and his 2nd wife, Cornelia, at Chrysler Museum of Art.
