We find solace in knowing she is at peace. We had a loving Mom who is now in God's loving embrace. Born in New Haven, CT, and raised in West Haven, CT, Mom enjoyed a wonderful childhood-swimming in Long Island Sound, playing tennis at Ames Point Club, sledding, ice skating and doing anything outdoors. Mom was happiest when exercising. As a lifeguard during college, she was credited with saving two lives. We are grateful Mom taught us how to swim and play tennis-activities we still love. Mom graduated from West Haven High School and Bowling Green University (synchronized swimming/tennis). She lived most of her life in Arlington, VA, before moving to Hampton Roads in 2012. She was a dedicated Mother whose strong Catholic faith was an integral aspect of her life, which wasn't always an easy one. As a stay-at-home Mom for 17 years, she encouraged and supported us as we chased our dreams. Although Mom never achieved her own dream of a career in physical education after her children were grown, she did have a career in administration working at the Mitre Corp and for Fairfax County Parks and Recreation. The highlight of Mom’s working years was serving in the White House during Jimmy Carter’s administration. Mom was so proud of her four children and five grandchildren-especially knowing each had a college degree. Mom is predeceased by her parents, Everett and Florence Williams. She is survived by her sister, Eve Phillips of Alpena, MI, cousin, Tom Williams (Ann) of Milford, CT, her children, Linda Wack of Sedona, AZ, Patty (Bill) Garrett of Norfolk, VA, Eve (Walter) Edwards of Springfield, VA, and Phil Brennan, Jr. of Seattle, WA, her grandchildren Leo Wack, Georgia Wack, John (Bridget) Garrett, Ethan Edwards, Caroline Edwards and great-grandchild, Ann Collins Garrett. The family would like to thank the compassionate care provided by The Ballentine/Norfolk and Sentara Hospice. We would also like to thank St. Therese Catholic Church of Chesapeake, VA for providing our Mom with spiritual strength as well as the Centering Prayer group that our Mom said “held her together.” The funeral and burial will be private, H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. is handling arrangements. The family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider a donation to Al-Anon, an organization Mom credits with saving her life (Al-Anon Family Headquarters, 1600 Corporate Landing Parkway, VA Beach, VA 23454-5610).
