SHIRLIE BRIGGS IS FATALLY BURNED Playing With Her Baby In Front Of Stove Mother's Clothing Ignites Mrs. Shirlie Esther Hurdle Briggs, wife of Clyde W. Briggs, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Hurdle, was fatally burned yesterday morning at 10 o'clock at the home of her parents, Level Green farm, Princess Anne County, and died in the afternoon at 6 o'clock after every effort had been exhausted to save her life. Mrs. Briggs was fondling her four-months-old baby in its carriage while standing with her back to a wood heater, when her clothing became ignited from the stove. Before realizing her plight, her clothing had burned nearly to her waist. She ran from the house into the high wind that was blowing at the time and was quickly enveloped into flames. All of her clothing was burned from her body. A colored man on the place, who was pumping water for the stock, threw water on Mrs. Briggs, but not in time to prevent the fatal results. Her mother, Mrs. Hurdle, was also painfully burned about the hands in her effort to tear the clothing from her daughter's body. When the flames had been extinguished, Mrs. Briggs was blistered from head to foot. By this time her father arrived and led her into the house. Mr. Hurdle immediately phoned for Dr. Ruffin, of Norfolk proper; Dr. J.A. Norfleet, of Berkley; and Dr. N.G. Wilson, of South Norfolk; also securing Miss Sadie Morgan, a trained nurse. Notwithstanding the physicians worked several hours, they realized from the first that it was a hopeless case, and held out no encouragement to her parents and husband, who was in Norfolk at the time, but arrived later at her side. Mrs. Briggs was 19 years old and the elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hurdle, and well known in Berkley. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She and Mr. Briggs were married about 15 months ago. The funeral will take place at the above residence Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. R.B. Scott, pastor of Oaklett Methodist Church; Dr. C.W. Perryman, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Ghent and Dr. L.F. Johnson, pastor of the First Christian Church, Berkley and burial will be in the family lot in Magnolia Cemetery. A special car will leave Campostella Heights Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock for the purpose of taking the friends and relatives of the family to the end of the line, where they will be met by vehicles to take them to the Hurdle home.
