Born on Dec. 20, 1943, in Suffolk, Gill grew up and spent most of his life in Norfolk. He graduated from Norfolk Academy and attended Randolph-Macon College and Old Dominion University. Gill began his business career as the fourth generation to be involved in his family business, The James G. Gill Company. He was also the co-founder and past president of First Colony Coffee and Tea Company, a gourmet coffee and tea business that, with his brother Tom, guided from a small brand into one of the leading specialty coffee companies in the United States. He was especially proud to be among the first to recognize and then advance the public's desire for gourmet coffee. Later in life, Gill developed a hobby in restoring an old gristmill in Lowesville, Va. From this, he founded Woodson's Mill, where he lived and developed a successful business after retiring from First Colony. He is survived by his wife, Salley Hiller Brockenbrough; children from a prior marriage, Jimmy and his spouse, Wendy, and a granddaughter, Catherine, Mercer, Austin, and Will Brockenbrough; parents, James G. and Mary Cross Brockenbrough; and brother, Tom Brockenbrough. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
