She enjoyed a full and wonderful life of almost 98 years. Mary Cross was born and raised in Suffolk, Virginia, the daughter of Thomas A. Jordan and Dora Cross Jordan. She graduated from Suffolk High School and was very active in the social life of the town, including being chosen as the Peanut Queen in 1936. Her family has long roots in the area going back to her father’s namesake, Thomas Jordan, who arrived in Jamestown in 1619. In 1942, she married her childhood sweetheart, James Gill Brockenbrough. One of the family’s favorite stories was that she and Jimmie were married "in haste," really meaning they had to move up the wedding two weeks because he was called to active duty after Pearl Harbor in WW II. Truly, they were both part of the “great generation.” After the war, the couple moved to Norfolk for Jimmie to join his grandfather’s coffee business, the James G. Gill Company. They raised a family of two boys and later helped raise her treasured grandchildren. She loved her family and loved to host family gatherings. On Jimmie’s retirement, they moved to Virginia Beach and spent many years enjoying the people and beach at 71st Street. Mary Cross loved life and people. She loved going out with friends and hosting some of the best parties seen at Virginia Beach and Norfolk. She was a lifelong member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Princess Anne Country Club and Garden Club. But the love of her life was her husband; they were constant companions and she stayed steadfastly at his side through the many good times and through his illnesses. She loved all her family. She is survived by a son, Thomas J. Brockenbrough and his wife, Joan. Her other son, James “Gill” Brockenbrough, predeceased her. Her grandchildren, James G. Brockenbrough III, Mercer Brockenbrough, Austin C. Brockenbrough, William M. Brockenbrough, Alexander B. Stone, and Thomas J. Brockenbrough Jr., were all special to her. And not to forget her great-grandchildren: Penn, Harrison, Katherine, Alex, Christopher, and Mallory, along with her favorite niece and nephew, Marion Cockey and John Cockey. A most important part of the family are her two prior daughters-in-law, Anne Brockenbrough and Francie Martin. The family would like to thank her two Senior Corp caregivers, Juanita Jacobs and Hephizibah Adjei for the loving care they gave. They took special care in making her last days peaceful. There will be a memorial service at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 11:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 2nd, followed by a reception at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Norfolk Academy, Norfolk Collegiate School or a charity of your choice. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
