MARY G. BROOKE DIES IN BALTIMORE Baltimore, Nov. 18--(AP)-- Following an illness of several months, Mrs. W.T. Brooke, of Norfolk, died at a local hospital today. She was 70 years old. _________________ Mrs. Mary Goode Brooke, of 324 Pembroke Avenue, who died in Baltimore yesterday morning, was the widow of William T. Brooke, city engineer of Norfolk for many years, and a sister of Judge James U. Goode, of Norfolk City Court. She was the daughter of John Goode, president of the Constitutional Convention of 1902-3 and a member of Congress. She was 70 years old. Surviving her are a son, James V. Brooke, of this city, and three daughters, Mrs. James M. Grant, of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. William Coleman, of Baltimore and Mrs. E.S. Ruffin, Jr., of this city. The body will arrive on the Baltimore boat this morning. **************************************************************************** FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD FOR MRS. BROOKE TODAY Was Founder of City's First Kindergarten and Active In Charity and Music Mrs. Mary Goode Brooke, who died in a Baltimore hospital Thursday, was one of the best known residents of Norfolk. She was 70 years old and had been a resident of this city for 60 years. Besides being a woman of remarkable ability she devoted a good portion of her life to others. She was particularly interested in children and with several other women, founded the first kindergarten in Norfolk in 1901. She not only helped to establish the first kindergarten but she also gave considerable time to teaching the little boys and girls who were enrolled as pupils. Mrs. Brooke was the organizer of the St. Cecilia Musical Society, which organization was responsible for bringing to Norfolk some of the greatest vocal and instrumental artists of that day. She was a gifted musician herself and was well known in musical circles in Norfolk, Baltimore and Washington. She possessed a sweet soprano voice. Sought By Society As a young woman she was much sought by society in Washington and Norfolk and took part in a number of social entertainments in this city and the national capital. Despite the fact that she was a woman of the old school, she kept abreast of the times and always was doing something to advance the cause of science, music and the higher things of life. She was a daughter of the late John Goode, the grand old man of Virginia who was president of the State Constitutional Convention of 1902-3 and a member of Congress. Her birthplace was Isle of Wight County but she came to Norfolk when she was 10 years old and made this city her home from that time on. She was the widow of William Throckmorton Brooke, who for years was city engineer of Norfolk. Mrs. Brooke is survived by three daughters and one son, Mrs. James B. Grant, Jr., of Denver; Mrs. William C. Coleman and Mrs. Edwin S. Ruffin, Jr., of Norfolk and James V. Brooke, of Norfolk, and a brother, Judge James U. Goode, of this city. The body arrived here yesterday morning from Baltimore and the funeral services will be held at St. Luke's Church this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The services will be conducted by Bishop Beverly D. Tucker assisted by Dr. D.W. Howard, rector of St. Luke's and Dr. Herbert Tucker. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
