Anne was born on February 21, 1933, in Norfolk, the daughter of James Vass Brooke and Edith Shepherd Brooke. She was the granddaughter of City Engineer William Brooke, for whom Brooke Avenue is named. She attended Miss Graham’s School and later graduated from Sweet Briar College with a B.A. in History in 1954, spending her junior year at St. Andrews, in Scotland. She earned a Masters (1961) and PhD (1969) in Greek and Latin Classics from Brown University. She taught Classics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was an Assistant Professor for Classics at Vassar College. Anne was known for her determination and perseverance. When she made up her mind to do something, she stuck to it. She applied this commitment to several significant causes, including moving to the Rhondda Valley in Wales, where she learned Welsh and took on the preservation of the language, working with teachers, parents and local nursery groups. She produced Welsh workbooks, educational materials and children’s books, many of which were eventually published. Anne generously supported interests close to her heart. She was a charter member of the National Museum of the American Indian, longtime supporter of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and tireless advocate for the Weyanoke Bird and Wildflower Sanctuary in Norfolk, to name a few. Anne epitomized the altruist - always thinking of others and charitable to the less fortunate. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Norfolk. Anne was a prolific reader and writer. She collected books and always gave them as gifts. She wrote letters to family and friends on a weekly basis, sharing her news, but more curious about others and their lives. Her handwriting was tiny, giving her more space to fill every page. Anne Brooke was one of a kind. She had many idiosyncrasies and habits, including a farewell ritual of raising a white handkerchief as you drove away in a car, waving it with the enthusiasm of a child, keeping it up until you passed from view. Anne is survived by her sister Mary, as well as her niece Elizabeth Laytin, and nephews Brooke and Peyton Robertson. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s in August, followed by a private burial. Online condolences may be offered to the family at hdoliver.com.
