Mary was born on August 17, 1925, in Norfolk, the daughter of James Vass Brooke and Edith Shepherd Brooke. She was the granddaughter of City engineer William Brooke, for whom Brooke Avenue is named. She attended Miss Graham’s School, where she received highest honors and was awarded the scholarship pin. Mary’s life was music. She studied piano at the Bristow Hardin School of Music, where at the early age of 11, she had a reputation as “an artist of unusual talent.” She won several music contests and, at 15, was a soloist with the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra. Mary won a music scholarship to Smith College, where she graduated Cum Laude in 1947 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Mary continued her musical career by moving to New York City where she taught piano, first in Scarsdale, then at the Diller-Quaile School in the City. She also enjoyed singing in several choruses and a madrigal group. Mary returned to Norfolk and taught piano at the Williams School. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Church choir. After her mother died in 1993, she moved to an apartment on Westover Avenue, where her sister Anne later joined her. With windows open, neighbors and friends could hear Mary play her wonderful repertoire of classical pieces on her Steinway grand piano, which she continued to enjoy until only a few years ago. Mary was wonderfully gifted in many ways, always thoughtful and caring. Mary was predeceased by her sisters Edith and Anne and is survived by her niece Elizabeth Laytin and nephews Brooke and Peyton Robertson. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s in August, followed by a private burial.
