J. Brooks, Negro Dies; Taxi Operator Since 1912 Edward J. Brooks, 60, Negro, one of Norfolk's oldest and best known taxi operators, died Monday at 6:45 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the B.F. King Funeral Home this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Brooks came here early in life and has operated a cab since 1912, the last 20 years at the Manhattan Taxi stand in the 600 block of East Brambleton Avenue. He owned his own cab. Brooks was highly regarded among both the white and Negro races for his sunny disposition and friendliness. He was widely known as "Ed Brooks, the man who refused to die" as a result of having been shot twice in the back of the head by a passenger some years ago. Brooks said he did not even know he had been hit until he felt blood running down his neck. *********************************************************************** Edward James Brooks - Funeral services for Mr. Brooks, 842 Monticello avenue, who died Sept. 30, were held Oct. 3 from King’s Funeral Chapel with the Rev. R. H. Bowling officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with the King’s Funeral Home in charge.
