Broughton, Formerly Active In Politics, Long Employed By City John M. Broughton, for the last quarter of a century superintendent of city cemeteries, died suddenly at 4:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at his residence, 1700 Willoughby Avenue. Mr. Broughton was 75 years old and for a number of years took a prominent part of the political affairs of Norfolk. He was formerly city constable and served on the City Council. He was a member of Norfolk Lodge B.P.O. Elks, Harmony Lodge, I.O.O.F. and Pocahontas Council, Royal Arcanum, and was a vestryman in St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Griswold Broughton; seven daughters, Mrs. B.C. Rhea, of Norfolk; Mrs. Graham Hill, of Washington; Mrs. George B. Edwards and Mrs. Emily Caffee, both of Norfolk; Mrs. Lewis Jackson, of Nansemond County; Miss Mildred Broughton, of Richmond and Mrs. Russell McDermott, of Canada; one son, William B. Broughton, of Norfolk; 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Abe Moses, of Norfolk. Mr. Broughton was married twice, his first wife having been Miss Susan Rodgers Tylor. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. Norman E. Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
