Norfolk Landmark August 20, 1897
Mrs. Eliza E. Brown, wife of Captain John Brown, keeper of the Craney Island 
lighthouse, died in this city yesterday morning at the residence of her son, Mr. 
J. R. Small, corner of Falkland and Chapel streets, after a protracted illness, 
having been paralyzed some three years ago. She was a lady possessing those 
qualifications of the heart and head which endeared her to all and had a large 
circle of friends. She leaves four children – Mr. W. C. Small, of Washington, 
D.C.; Mr. J. R. Small and Mr. A. B. Small, of Norfolk, and Mrs. M. F. Pettit of 
Alexandria. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 5 o’clock from the 
residence.
