Virginian-Pilot November 27, 1914
Captain John Brown, who for forty-seven years was keeper of the Craney Island 
lighthouse, died early yesterday morning at a local hospital. Captain Brown had 
been in bad health for about two years. He was a member of the Washington lodge of 
Odd Fellows, No. 2. He was 82 years old. The funeral will take place at 3 o’clock 
Sunday afternoon from H. C. Smith’s funeral apartments, 306 Bank street. The 
interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
