He had been confined to his bed almost constantly for the past six months. He had for years been afflicted with Bright’s disease, which was the immediate cause of his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Corprew Brown, daughter of the late David Corprew, and two daughters, Mrs. John Whitehead and Miss Grace Corprew Brown, of Norfolk and two half-brothers and one half-sister, Captain Richard Herbert and Mr. John Herbert, and Mrs. Willie Matherson, of Portsmouth. Dr. Brown came of an old Virginia family, the son of the Rev. Samuel Brown, a Baptist minister, of Portsmouth, in which city he spent his boyhood days. Dr. Brown was left a large estate by his father, and being a large slave owner, was a heavy loser by the war. He was intensely loyal to the South and when the State called for troops, promptly enlisted as a private in a Portsmouth company, but on account of his health did not see much active service, being assigned to department work at Richmond. He was one of the few Confederates who did not surrender, was unreconstructed, never acknowledged allegiance to the Union, and had not voted since the war. He was an old Virginia gentleman, a man of fine attainments, and of a strong personality. He was retiring in disposition, living much to himself, and for the last twenty years had not been actively engaged in business. The funeral will take place from the family residence, Friday morning at 11 o’clock, and will be conducted by Rev. W.P. Jordan. The burial will be in Elmwood.
