Bruns, Jr., 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and resident of Chesapeake passed away on February 23, 2022 at a local hospital. Ray was born on October 3, 1934, in Norfolk, VA to Raymond H. and Margaret M. Bruns. He grew up in the Ocean View area. Ray attended Holy Trinity Catholic School and graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in 1953. He then followed his father and brother into the structural steel business as a laborer/burner trainee. To fulfill his military obligation, he joined the United States Air Force in 1955. He served at various military installations with the last being Gunter AFB Alabama, where he met a young lady named Merle and married her on June 6, 1959. After his time in the Air Force, he returned to Norfolk and became Vice President of Barnum Bruns Iron Works, Inc. He retired as a self-employed steel detailer/estimator 60 years later. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church for 60 years. Ray's pride and joy was his family. He especially enjoyed the alternating weekend family gatherings at "Grandmas" for one of grandma's special dinners. He had a witty sense of humor and loved to entertain everyone with his jokes. He was a lifelong Washington Redskins fan. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Margaret, Helen, and Shirley; brother, John; daughter, Karen Bottum; and granddaughter, Lisa Bottum. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Merle Bruns; daughter, Pamela Dunn (Raymond); sons, Raymond Bruns III, Michael Bruns (Cheryl); daughter, Jennifer Bruns; grandsons, Sean Dunn (Rachel), Patrick Dunn (Sarah), Noah Bruns; great grandson, Granger Dunn; sister-in-law, Joanne Bruns; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held at 11am, Monday, February 28, 2022 at St. Matthews Catholic Church, followed by a brief reception. Burial to follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 pm until 5 pm, Sunday, February 27, 2022. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel is assisting the family.
